Chaplains are class-taught (a 12-day class instruction course in spiritual healing from an authorized Christian Science teacher) students of Christian Science who have demonstrated an ability to heal and can present its teachings compassionately to those inquiring about Christian Science. They serve as practitioners, conduct church services, and give one-on-one interviews and prayerful treatment when it is requested. Chaplains are referred by their branch churches and are trained and supported by local committees. They are sometimes assisted by workers.
